Capital: Bengaluru (also spelled Bangalore), which is a major hub for technology, education, and business.
Language: Kannada is the official and predominant language.
Population: According to the 2011 Census, about 61 million people.

History & Formation

Before Indian independence, much of the region was part of the Mysore State, a princely state.
After independence, the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 merged many Kannada-speaking regions to form the modern Mysore State.
In 1973, Mysore State was renamed Karnataka.

Economy & Development

Karnataka has one of the more productive state economies in India. Bengaluru is often called the “Silicon Valley of India” because of its large IT/technology sector.
Agriculture remains important, particularly in rural areas. Crops include rice, sugarcane (in coastal plains), coffee and tea (in hilly regions).

Culture & Society

The formation of Karnataka is commemorated every year on 1st November as Kannada Rajyotsava.
